What is bench mark and different types of benchmarks .

It is a fixed reference point of known elevation the reduced level of this point is determines with reference to datum line

The bench mark are used for taking the base or reference level to get ground profile.

The bench mark are classified as 4 types.



  1. GTS bench mark
  2. Temporary benchmarks
  3. Arbitratory benchmark
  4. Permanent benchmark


1).GTS bench mark.

This type of benchmarks used for large projects and heavy construction works . It is established by survey of India at an interval of 100km of all over the country with respect to mean sea level at Bombay as datum.

2). Permanent bench mark.

These are established between the great trigonometrical benchmark by the govt agencies like PWD : Public wealth dept

These are used for railway line and any precious works .

3). Arbitratory benchmark.

These bench mark whose elavation are arbitrary ( assuming) for small levelling operations. Their elavation do not refer to any fix to datum.

4). Temporary benchmarks.

These bench mark are reference point on which days work is closed and from and where levelling is continuous the next day.

This type of bench mark are used for marking the last level at end of work to start the work next day. These not permanent level its is temporarily marnkim level.
